Today in history: October 16, 1968

Today in history: October 16, 1968 - African American Olympic medalists John Carlos and Tommie Smith raise their fists in a Black power salute while receiving their medals at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, inspiring progressive people and enraging reactionaries in the U.S. and around the world...

In addition to raising their fists, the two men wore no shoes to protest Black poverty as well as beads and scarves to protest lynching. This took place in a context of upsurge in the Black liberation movement within the U.S. and revolutionary struggles around the world.
